Alberta invests in Vivo facility expansion
VIVO - The $60-million Vivo for Healthier Generations expansion in Calgary project is expected to increase the building’s footprint by 85,000 square feet and feature a unique indoor park and an applied research facility as well as an expanded fitness space and aquatics centre that will feature a new six-lane, 25-metre pool.

CALGARY, ALTA. – The Province of Alberta recently announced an investment of $15 million over three years in Vivo’s expansion plans for the facility formerly known Cardel Place, located in northeast Calgary.

Since opening in 2004, the Vivo for Healthier Generations’ facility has been providing programming space for individuals as young as three months old to seniors, offering a range of services to promote and support overall health and wellbeing.

The population served by the centre has since grown from 80,000 to 132,000 and is estimated to reach 190,000 by 2026, states a release.

Over the past few years, the organization has been planning to expand their current programming space by approximately 50 per cent.

According to the release, the estimated $60-million expansion project is expected to increase the building’s footprint by 85,000 square feet and feature a unique indoor park and an applied research facility as well as an expanded fitness space and aquatics centre that will feature a new six-lane, 25-metre pool.

The project will be aiming for LEED Gold certification.

Although the project schedules have not been announced, construction could get underway as early as 2019, the release reads.

The project is expected to create 320 new construction jobs and 60 permanent jobs upon completion.

“Our communities are excited by the province’s decision to invest in healthy individuals, families and the community. This new funding recognizes that social connections and physical activities are equally important to our shared well-being,” said Cynthia Watson, chief evolution officer, Vivo for Healthier Generations, in a statement.
