Balmoral Circus, designed by DIALOG, has received a Special Mention in the Architizer A+Awards, in the category of Architecture + Urban Transformation.
With entries received from over 70 countries, the Special Mention distinction is awarded to projects that exhibit remarkable achievement, with Balmoral Circus identified as an industry leader for architecture and design worldwide.
Completed in 2023, the Balmoral Circus redesign in Calgary, Alberta is a remarkable example of how a simple intersection can be transformed into a community destination—one that responds to a neighbourhood’s evolving needs. Originally designed in the 1930s, the intersection originally featured four encircled quadrants and planting beds. Through extensive public consultation, the team landed on a striking concept; breathing room in a dense urban space.
With a goal to revitalize greenspace and create a meaningful community destination, Balmoral Circus creates a quiet outdoor space and open community space for its community members, reduces on-street parking, and provides pathways for pedestrian walking and cycling. This urban design project has created a meaningful experience for the community – a space for play, exercise, conversation, and beauty – a place to come together in the public realm. With its rich history and unique design, the redesign of the space presented an opportunity to transform the landscape back to its original form.
Congratulations to everyone involved and to all other recipients!
