The PCL Construction | DIALOG + Stantec design-build team leading the Calgary Cancer Project has achieved substantial completion on the $1.4 billion facility. Located at the Foothills Medical Centre campus, the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre, will centralize cancer research, treatment and care for patients and their families in southern Alberta. The facility will include over 100 chemotherapy chairs and patient exam rooms, 160 inpatient unit beds and 12 radiation vaults, among other programs and spaces.
The extensive scope and integration of cancer care services at the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre will make it one of the most comprehensive cancer centres in the world, focusing on prevention, early detection, precision medicine and psychosocial care. In this collaborative environment, health care providers will be inspired by a facility that supports innovation and education. Over 900 user groups including clinical users and patient, family and volunteer representatives from Alberta provided input on the design of the facility, impacting how patients, providers and other users will interact with the centre.
Rob Adamson, DIALOG Partner shared “The DIALOG team is delighted to join PCL and Stantec in acknowledging this important milestone for the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre. We are incredibly proud to have worked together on this transformational project that will so significantly impact the wellbeing of Albertans and their access to a world-class cancer care facility. We are proud of the many innovations in the new Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre including the integration of care and research –the design presents the opportunity to establish Alberta as an international leader in cancer care, research, education, and innovation.”
Symbolizing the type of care a patient can expect to receive at the new Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre the design features two curving L-shaped forms that come together at the centre of the facility, in an embrace that surrounds an all-season exterior garden as the “heart”. The garden will provide year-round access and views to nature and sunlight for patients and their families as they receive care and treatment.
The PCL Construction | DIALOG + Stantec design-build team has been working on the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre project since 2017. On any given day, approximately 900 construction and trades workers have been on site to keep the project moving forward on time, and on budget.
DIALOG, and Stantec in collaboration, are responsible for the architecture and interior design and structural and electrical engineer of the new Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre, as well as mechanical engineering services in collaboration with Smith + Anderson.
The Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre is the largest government infrastructure project in the province to date. Alberta Health Services will now begin operational commissioning of the facility, installation of medical equipment, and other preparatory activities, in advance of welcoming patients in 2024.
Congratulations to all involved on this wonderful milestone!
