Centennial College A-Building Expansion Achieves LEED Gold Certification

May 6, 2024

Centennial College A-Building Expansion has achieved LEED Gold Certification! This certification is an international symbol of commitment to sustainability excellence and green building leadership.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, by the Canada Green Building Council, is the world’s most widely used green building rating system. It encourages the development of high-performing, resilient buildings that reduce energy use and carbon emissions, conserve water, reduce waste, promote sustainable site development, and prioritize user health.

Centennial College A-Building Expansion, located on the Centennial College Progress Campus in Scarborough, ON, is a transformative addition to the college’s campus that seamlessly blends Indigenous perspectives, sustainability and innovative architecture. The project is Canada’s first LEED Gold, zero carbon, WELL certified, mass timber, higher-education facility.

Smoke Architecture, an Anishinaabeg owned and operated architecture practice, coordinated with DIALOG on the Indigenous aspects of the design. DIALOG partnered with EllisDon Construction on the A-Building project.

LEED-certified buildings are critical to addressing climate change and meeting ESG goals, enhancing resilience, and supporting more equitable communities – factoring in all critical elements that work together to create the best building possible.

When analyzing a building, of all LEED credits, 35% relate to climate change, 20% directly impact human health, 15% impact water resources, 10% affect biodiversity, 10% relate to the green economy, and 5% impact community and natural resources.

We are proud that Centennial College is offering environmental, social and governance benefits, for a healthier future. Congratulations to the project team on this remarkable achievement!
