Russell Angelo Ramil, MSc. Candidate at the University of Alberta.
A recent graduate from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Russell is currently researching hybrid mass timber systems, analyzing how shear steel connections perform under extreme structural scenarios – a critical area for improving the resilience and sustainability of timber buildings. His experience includes work on the Edmonton Valley Line West and Southeast LRT projects, and he actively mentors future engineers through the Engineering Student Society and Mentors for Youth.
“As a young child with boundless curiosity, I dreamed of a career centred around structures, in either architecture or engineering,” Russell says. “In high school, I discovered a natural affinity for engineering, as my enthusiasm for math and science intensified.”
After finishing his master’s degree, Russell plans to work as a structural engineer in a consulting firm, focusing on sustainable and resilient building practices. He hopes to pursue a LEED Green Associate certification to deepen his commitment to a zero-carbon future through sustainable and efficient design.
The scholarship was presented at an evening ceremony held at the DIALOG Edmonton studio on Jan. 28, 2025. The event was an opportunity for University of Alberta faculty members, and other community leaders to connect with this year’s scholarship recipient, learn more about the scholarship and our featured projects, and our Edmonton structural team.
Congratulations on this wonderful achievement, Russell!
