DIALOG Hosts ACADIA 2024 ‘Designing Change’ Workshops

November 8, 2024

DIALOG is delighted to host three workshops at the 2024 ACADIA (Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture) Conference, organized by UCalgary’s School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape (SAPL), taking place in Calgary and Banff, from November 11 to 16, 2024.

ACADIA is an international network of design professionals exploring how computation tools shape the future of architecture and building science. This year’s conference theme ‘Designing Change’, spotlights how computational design can transform some of the most pressing challenges in the built environment, from nano-scale innovations to urban master plans.

As a Gold-Level Sponsor for this year’s event and long-time partner of the UCalgary SAPL, we’re excited to be hosting the Workshop Reception in the DIALOG Calgary studio on Tuesday, November 12, along with three of ACADIA’s workshops.

Developing in Practice: From Script to Deploy | Monday, November 11

This workshop will introduce the Code Editor in Rhino 8 – a new framework designed for user-friendly tool development and deployment). Using a real-life industry case study from an architectural practice, this session will provide guidance through identifying a suite of tools that streamline project deliverables, with a particular focus on documentation and geometry attributes. The goal of the workshop is to provide attendees with the skills to integrate these tools as a plugin, easily shareable across teams.

Rhino.Inside Revit for Data-Driven Design | Tuesday, November 12

Building from the bottom up, this day-long workshop will provide attendees with a strong theoretical understanding of Rhino.Inside Revit data structures, and 5-8 scripts which are applicable to common design challenges. This session will explore how Rhino.Inside can act as a data conduit, transferring and altering the metadata embedded in 3D geometry, allowing bi-directional flow between Rhino and Revit.

Train your Grasshopper Algorithm – Machine Learning with LunchBoxML | Wednesday, November 13

LunchBoxML is a free and open-source toolkit that provides a set of Machine Learning (ML) components for Grasshopper. Designers use these components to train predictive ML models and develop purpose-built tools that help them solve design problems in new ways. Designers can use LunchBoxML to create their own novel ML implementations with data they can curate, control, and evaluate. This workshop will introduce users to ML workflows and methods that include data preparation, algorithm selection, model training, and model implementation.

Please note that workshop seats are limited.

About ACADIA 2024

ACADIA 2024 celebrates a moment of change where advances in digital technology, fabrication, AI, blockchains, cyberspaces and metaverses have created new expectations that remove authority from a central source.

ACADIA 2024, themed “Designing Change,” looks at computational design as an active agent of change in the built environment. As computational design evolves from theoretical concepts to practical implementations, it redefines conventional architectural practices and introduces new operational modes in both the physical world and new realities. The 2024 ACADIA conference spotlights the emergence of ‘archipreneurs’—innovators who combine digital design with entrepreneurial ventures, such as consulting, digital fabrication, or startups at the crossroads of technology, architecture, and fabrication.
