The future of the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry depends not just on innovation, but on inclusive leadership that reflects the diversity of the communities it serves.
That idea was front and centre at Rise to Lead: Accelerating Equity in Architecture, Engineering, and Construction—a panel discussion hosted by DIALOG’s Calgary studio in partnership with Women in Consulting Engineering (WCE) Calgary and Building Equality in Architecture (BEA).
Held on March 13, the event brought together four leaders from across the sector to explore this year’s International Women’s Day theme, Accelerate Action. Moderated by Kayla Browne, Principal at Bold Architecture, the panel featured Kate Thompson, President of Calgary Municipal Land Corporation; John Souleles, Partner at DIALOG; Jennifer Massig, CEO of Magna Engineering Services; and Sandra MacDougall, Director of Operations at Bird Construction.
In a candid and wide-ranging conversation, panelists reflected on their career journeys, the state of equity in the industry, and the work still required to dismantle systemic barriers. They emphasized the importance of diverse perspectives in shaping stronger, more responsive built environments—both in the boardroom and on the job site.
“True diversity isn’t just about gender, ethnicity, or other corporate metrics,” says Thompson. “[It’s about] fostering a range of experiences, thought processes, and approaches to enhance problem solving.”
Authenticity surfaced as a key element of leadership, as speakers shared how staying true to their values helped them navigate challenges and build influence.
Mentorship was also credited as a critical component of fostering success. As each of the panelists reflected on their careers, there was an appeal to the audience to adopt leadership mindsets and take initiative to meet the immense demand for equitable leadership in the industry.
“Leadership is about leading with passion, rather than entitlement,” says Massig.
