DIALOG Receives Urban Design Plans Award and Honourable Mentions at Calgary’s 2022 MUDA

November 14, 2022

DIALOG received the 2022 Urban Design Plans Award for Balmoral Circus and honourable mentions for the Lougheed Building (Confluence Award) and Fifth Street Underpass Enhancement (Urban Fragments Award) at the 2022 Mayor’s Urban Design Awards (MUDA).

On Wednesday, November 9, the City of Calgary celebrated the city’s continuous pursuit to achieve a modern and inclusive urban landscape and recognized the contribution of Calgary’s industry professionals at this year’s Mayor’s Urban Design Awards.

MUDA awarded Balmoral Circus the Urban Design Plans award for its inspirational redevelopment plan for urban transformation and its potential to create a significant impact on the city’s sustainability and development.

Originally designed in the 1930s, Balmoral Circus is located on the corner of 19 Avenue and 2 Street N.W. in Calgary. The landscape featured lawns and planting beds that pushed for social order, civic harmony, and increased quality of life during the City Beautiful Movement. With its rich history and unique design, as well as increased concern for roadway traffic, the redesign of the space presented an opportunity to transform the landscape back to its original form.

With a goal to revitalize greenspace and create a meaningful community destination, Balmoral Circus will create a quiet outdoor space and potential open community space for its community members, reduce on-street parking, and provide pathways for pedestrian walking and cycling.

“Our project, Balmoral Circus, aimed to make a public space the best it can be for all Calgarians,” says Bryce Miranda, DIALOG Partner.

In addition to DIALOG’s award win, the Lougheed Building received an honourable mention in the Confluence award category which recognizes a public space, building, or group of buildings that achieve urban design excellence and creativity through awareness of Calgary’s history, identity, location, and culture.

In collaboration with Jill Anholt studio, the Fifth Street Underpass Enhancement also received an honourable mention in the Urban Fragments award category that recognizes single or multiple small-scale pieces of a building or landscape that contribute significantly to the beautification, sustainability, enjoyment, and quality of the urban environment.

Congratulations to all project teams involved in these wonderful achievements!
