DIALOG Revitalizes Underutilized Urban Space into Vibrant, Accessible Park

October 10, 2024

Humpy Hollow Park Redevelopment, designed by DIALOG, had its grand opening last Thursday, October 3, 2024. Located in the Calgary Beltline, a central and densely populated area of the city, the project revitalized an underutilized urban space into a vibrant, inclusive, and accessible park that serves the surrounding community.

Balancing historic preservation and modern community needs, the Humpy Hollow Park Redevelopment exemplifies the commitment to enhancing public spaces that enrich community life. Central to the redevelopment is the seamless integration into the park design of the historic McHugh House, a significant cultural landmark. This balance between heritage preservation and contemporary urban needs reinforces the park’s connection to its community.

Humpy Hollow encourages social interaction and community engagement through flexible recreational spaces including a performance stage, seating areas, and play zones. The Play & Perform areas are central to the park’s new identity, encouraging physical activity and creativity. Moveable site furnishings and adaptable design elements ensure that the park can evolve with the community’s needs.

The participatory design process, driven by community consultations and feedback, ensured the park reflects local needs and values through civic engagement and public realm improvement.

As part of a citizen-led initiative, the Beltline Neighbourhoods Association (BNA) initiated the revitalization in response to the community’s need for more multi-purpose and inviting spaces. The redevelopment addresses these demands and  fosters social interaction, cultural activities, and opportunities for recreation year-round. By enhancing accessibility and incorporating sustainable landscaping, the park now serves as an essential recreational destination within the fabric of the city.

DIALOG is thrilled to have contributed to the landscape of Humpy Hollow, creating a much-loved inner-city park for people and pets, and a space that fosters inclusivity, community interaction, and enhances Calgary’s livability.
