Two-Eyed Seeing: Centennial College A-Block Expansion Project
““Two-Eyed Seeing” is a Mi’kmaq concept of observing the world through both an Indigenous and Western lens. For Centennial College’s A-Block Expansion project, DIALOG + Smoke Architecture turned to Two-Eyed Seeing in shaping the conversations and design of this award-winning project. Hear how the firms’ winning design suggests a path forward for various institutions, architects, and designers, in forming potential solutions to the ongoing crisis of climate and inequity.
Eladia Smoke, founder and principal architect of Smoke Architecture, brought the traditions, heritage, and cultures of Indigenous people, including the engagement and working with Elders and community leaders in shaping the design of the A-Block Expansion Project in creating this future gateway building that embodies the College’s deep commitment to Truth and Reconciliation.
Chen Cohen, partner and interior designer at DIALOG, brought her extensive experience in post-secondary and large, institutional complex projects in designing a flexible, accessible, and equitable landmark building for Centennial College. Through her thoughtful engagement of stakeholders, she led the exploration and design around cultural, physical, and gender sensitives to support and enhance the user experience.”
