Agile Design and Human Scale Focus: How Cancer Centre Design Can Aspire to Both

Cancer treatment advances are rapid, buoyed by rampant and accelerating advances of technology: targeted therapies, radical advances in radiology and imaging, and widespread use of virtual communication. Cancer centre design needs to respond to these evolutions with a nimble, agile approach that retains within the ‘mothership’ the sophisticated skill sets and expensive equipment but moves back to the community the softer services in settings that are more convenient and more effective for the patient.

How do you design the ever-more sophisticated core services of the comprehensive cancer centre in a way that retains flexibility and adaptability but also addresses the patient’s need for a therapeutic, supportive human-scale environment?

Joined by Catherine Zeliotis, Principal and healthcare leader, Stantec, Diego will present the design of the new Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre, Canada’s largest cancer treatment and research facility and second largest in North America. The Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre will centralize screening, research, education, treatment and patient- and family-centered care in southern Alberta. The design features two curving L-shaped forms that come together in an embrace surrounding an all-season garden as the “heart,” providing year-round access and views to nature for patients and their families.
