Edmonton’s Mechanized River Valley Access receives a National Urban Design Award of Excellence

Edmonton’s Mechanized River Valley Access project, also known as 100 Street Funicular, has received a National Urban Design Award of Excellence for Civic Design!
The one-of-a-kind urban infrastructure project connects Edmonton’s downtown and the steep bank of the North Saskatchewan River valley in an engaging journey that includes a funicular and urban stair, boardwalk promenade, pedestrian bridge, panoramic lookout, and glass elevator. The project stood out to the jury as more than just a public infrastructure piece. This is an urban space defined by the unique experiences, views, and connections along the way.
A beautifully-conceived ensemble of built structures, open spaces, and public art that successfully connects Edmonton’s downtown to the river valley. The juxtaposition of landscape attributes and the architectural details and materiality of the downtown milieu are compelling.National Urban Design Awards Jury Comment
The National Urban Design Awards are held biannually by the RAIC, CSLA and CIP, and are the highest national honour for urban design projects across Canada. Twelve projects—each with a tremendous impact on the surrounding built environment—have been selected for the 2020 awards, and DIALOG is honoured to be included. Mechanized River Valley Access was awarded an Edmonton Urban Design Award in November 2019 before being recognized at the national level.
