On March 22, the manufacturing of the first ever, full-scale Hybrid Timber Floor System (HTFS) floor panels hit a groundbreaking milestone.
Big things are happening! In collaboration with EllisDon’s Construction Sciences division, the post-tensioning of two of the first ever 40ft full-scale hybrid timber panels was successfully completed at the EllisDon Modular facility in Stoney Creek.
This remarkable technology combines cross-laminated timber with steel reinforcement and concrete, creating prefabricated floors that are thinner and have a reduced carbon footprint compared to traditional materials.
The post-tensioned steel tendons within the concrete beam elements of the HTFS panels successfully each carried an applied internal force of 1026 KN—the first prototype to ever do this. The patented floor system is paving the way for allowing mass timber to participate in large span structures, an advancement that will transform the construction industry.
