From One to Another: DIALOG’s Michael Evamy Scholarship Recipient Lukas Ewing Presents Winning Research

November 7, 2024

On Thursday, October 24, 2024, the 2023 Michael Evamy Scholarship recipient Lukas Ewing presented his winning research thesis “From One to Another: A fragmentary complex” at the DIALOG Toronto Studio.

Selected from a field of candidates across Canada, the scholarship provides the opportunity for a student to undertake a research project in a field of interest to them relevant to the practice of architecture. The Michael Evamy Scholarship was established by DIALOG to honour the memory of Michael Evamy, a partner instrumental in building the practice.

Lukas, a graduate of the Bachelor of Environmental Design program and Master of Architecture candidate at UBC, was awarded the scholarship in 2023, receiving $5,000 for his research and an additional $3,000 for project-related expenses.

Lukas’ thesis, which examines how architecture can ease transitional moments for newcomers to Canada, encourages the design of spaces that foster a sense of belonging – a topic of personal interest for Lukas. His travel study proposed a visit to his birth country Vietnam for 30 days to understand adoption and transient spaces. As an adoptee from Vietnam, Lukas brought a unique perspective to his work, exploring how thoughtfully crafted environments can support those experiencing Canada for the first time.

“My research is an exploration of intercountry child adoption, its associated architectural space, and the complexities within the process,” Ewing shares. “It focuses on the uncertainty individuals confront while navigating unfamiliar spaces and experiences.”

“Lukas’ thesis encourages us to refocus on architecture for humanity,” shares Michael Evamy jury member Nicole Moyo, “and we’re excited to see how Lukas uses his personal story to empower others through architecture.”

About the Michael Evamy Scholarship

DIALOG established the Michael Evamy Scholarship to honour the memory of Michael Evamy, a partner instrumental in building its integrated practice from 1966 to 1993. The award provides financial assistance to the selected Canadian student attending a Canadian school of architecture in the year prior to their final year of study, to undertake a specific research project in a field of interest to them and relevant to the practice of architecture.
