SFU Burnaby Campus expanded its on-campus dining experience to new heights and officially opened its new Dining Commons on Monday, August 29.
The Dining Commons is an expansion of SFU’s dining hall located at the western side of Burnaby campus and extends to over 28,000 sq ft, offering seats for an additional five hundred people at a table, bistro, and bar-like setting. Open 24/7 throughout the fall and spring term, the space allows for students to not only dine but to also meet, socialize, and study.
The space sets itself to create a restaurant-like experience by providing students with over ten globally-inspired culinary stations serving local and seasonal ingredients, and plant-based options, and includes a large outdoor patio and mezzanine for different seating arrangements.
The Dining Commons is a certified LEED® Gold building designed with large skylights and floor-to-ceiling windows allowing for natural light to enter the space, with the use of wood materials to create furniture and furnishings. To maintain a more sustainable approach, the dining hall also uses reusable dishware and cutlery, local produce, and composting methods.
“I can’t wait to see the new Dining Commons become a go-to destination for students to connect with each other, have a study session, or simply enjoy a delicious meal,” says Joy Johnson, SFU President.
