The University of Calgary MacKimmie Complex, designed by DIALOG, has achieved LEED platinum certification – the highest level of LEED certification.
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an international symbol of commitment to sustainability excellence and green building leadership. It is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement and offers a framework for buildings to have environmental, social and governance benefits. LEED focuses on seven energy and environmental design concepts: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, innovation in design, and regional priority.
Completed in 2022, the MacKimmie Complex comprises a fully renovated tower and block and a brand-new link that connects the two buildings by an atrium, surrounded by a redesigned outdoor gathering space. Designed with high performance features, the project also achieved a CaGBC Zero Carbon Design certification.
The multi-phase project enhances academic and administrative environments, accommodates growth, and strengthens the sense of place and community in the heart of the University of Calgary’s main campus. The building skin makes its energy-modelling systems visible to the eye as a way to make climate change conversations a permanent fixture in life on campus. MacKimmie Complex stands as a daily and practical inspiration for students to focus more on sustainability.
Promoted by the Canada Green Building Council, LEED certification encourages the development of high-performing, resilient buildings that reduce energy use and carbon emissions, conserve water, reduce waste, promote sustainable site development, and prioritize user health.
Congratulations to the team for achieving this remarkable certification!
