DIALOG and the Michael Evamy Scholarship Board of Trustees are pleased to offer the 2024 Michael Evamy Scholarship to Jonah Kurylowich, Dalhousie University Bachelor of Environmental Design and Architecture graduate and Master of Architecture candidate.
Kurylowich was selected from a field of candidates across Canada, with the scholarship set to support his original research in a thesis titled, “Architecture and Crisis: Analyzing the Spatialization of Perceived Threats Through Emergency Response Infrastructure” – a thesis aimed at studying the role that architecture plays in emergency response.
Selected by a jury of DIALOG members, Kurylowich’s winning entry looks at how the allocation of infrastructure and material for emergency response are influenced by rural, remote, and northern areas.
“I’m overjoyed to receive this scholarship,” Kurylowich shares. “Climate change is disproportionately affecting the north, and this scholarship allows me to be present in the community and understand the subject better than I would from behind a computer. As a volunteer firefighter, former Red Cross Emergency Response Team Responder, member of the Metis nation of Alberta and as a person who is from a rural/remote community in Northern Alberta, this topic resonates with my personal background. I believe that effective, situated, and intentional architecture can create deeper community involvement and ownership.”
The Michael Evamy scholarship is awarded to a Canadian student attending a Canadian school of architecture in their second last year of study to undertake a research project of interest relevant to the practice of architecture. Upon completion of the study, Kurylowich will present his findings in 2025.
Thank you to the DIALOG jury team Diego Morettin, Jim Montgomery, Donna Clare, Nicole Moyo, Doug McConnell, and Juan Carlos Portuese for their efforts and dedication in selecting the scholarship recipient.
Congratulations, Jonah. We look forward to learning about your findings.
