Humpy Hollow Park

A vibrant hub for community and culture

Urbanism

The Humpy Hollow Park Redevelopment demonstrates Calgary’s dedication to enhancing public spaces that serve and enrich the community. Situated in the Beltline area, this urban park transformation has revitalized an underutilized green space into a vibrant hub, seamlessly integrating the historic McHugh House, built in 1896, with contemporary park amenities. The redevelopment celebrates the park’s heritage while creating a dynamic, multi-purpose space that meets the needs of today’s urban community. Shaped by extensive public engagement, the park’s design centers around the “Play & Perform” concept, which supports diverse programming and amenities. Flexible performance areas, a playful landscape, and casual gathering spots ensure the park remains active and welcoming year-round.

The design emphasizes flexibility and accessibility, creating an inclusive space for people of all abilities. Open lawns and performance areas can host community events, while smaller, intimate spaces provide spots for casual activities.

McHugh House remains central to the park’s identity, serving as a historical anchor and community hub. It balances its heritage significance with a contemporary design that fosters connectivity throughout the Beltline.

The park’s materials palette reflects a commitment to sustainability and durability. The design incorporates natural stone, permeable surfaces, and native plantings that echo Calgary’s local landscape while supporting stormwater management.

Adaptive seating elements and moveable furnishings contribute to the park’s flexibility, allowing spaces to transform based on programming needs or daily use.

The participatory design process, driven by community consultations and feedback, ensured the park reflects local needs and values through civic engagement and public realm improvement.
