Established in 2003, this competition is held annually as part of the University of Alberta’s Winter term. CIV E 479 is the Faculty of Engineering’s fourth-year capstone structural design project course. In the course, a hypothetical design problem is given to the students based on site and client parameters taken from real Edmonton projects. At the end of the course, teams present their designs in a formal presentation juried by engineers, architects, city officials, and other industry leaders. The award was founded in an effort to encourage students to take an active interest in structural engineering and to encourage the development of public speaking and networking skills.
The total value of the awards given is $2,500. The award funds will be distributed as determined by the jury and may be divided among contestants.
