Cristina Horta Associate, Urban Designer  MUD, BArch Vancouver

Cristina is an urban designer based out of our Vancouver studio with extensive experience in projects spanning public spaces, mixed-use developments, and affordable housing. She began her career as an architect in Mexico City, where she worked on a diverse range of projects from architectural and interior design to master planning.

At DIALOG, Cristina is dedicated to designing innovative and sustainable affordable housing solutions that enhance community wellbeing. She firmly believes that well-designed, affordable housing can positively impact communities, promote social equity, and create opportunities for economic growth.

Cristina’s commitment to sustainability and community-focused design drives her work, as she seeks to create environments that foster connection and inclusivity. Her experience in both architecture and urban design allows her to approach projects holistically, considering not just the physical structures but also the broader social context.

Through her innovative ideas and collaborative spirit, Cristina’s vision for affordable housing reflects a deep understanding of community needs and a commitment to designing spaces that empower residents. As a passionate advocate for social equity, Cristina continues to contribute significantly to our efforts in creating meaningful, lasting change in the communities we share.

In addition to her work at DIALOG, Cristina is an adjunct professor at UBC, teaching in the Master of Urban Design studio.

What’s your favorite DIALOG project?

Rainbow Park because it showcases innovative design while integrating Indigenous culture and values in a meaningful way.

What is your favorite DIALOG initiative?

I love the studio design reviews. These sessions are such a unique and inspiring part of DIALOG’s culture. They’re a space where we get to showcase the design process behind ongoing projects and share them with the entire studio. It’s not just about presenting the final product—it’s about opening the process up, sharing challenges, and getting valuable input.

It’s initiatives like these that make DIALOG feel like such a connected and supportive community.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration in nature. There’s something about its patterns, shapes, and how everything works together that always sparks new ideas for me. Whether it’s the texture of a tree trunk or the way light filters through leaves, it always gets my creativity flowing.

Travel too — experiencing different cultures and seeing how people live in other parts of the world always broadens my perspective. There’s so much to learn from how others approach life, and the little things like a street market or the design of a hidden courtyard that stick with me and influence my work.
