DIALOG is heading to BUILDEX Alberta 2024!
Join the DIALOG team, Greg Widmeyer, Director of Technology; Megan Brooks, Associate and Leader of Design Technology; Mark Roloson, Senior Design Technology Specialist; and Ben Hackman, Architectural Technologist from October 23 to 24, 2024, at the BMO Centre at Stampede Park for sessions on leveraging computational design in architecture, engineering, and construction.
For over 20 years, BUILDEX has been providing essential continuing education, new product sourcing, and networking opportunities for Alberta’s building and construction industry. The conference brings together colleagues, influencers, and industry peers from across the AEC profession for two days of educational seminars, panels, keynotes, workshops, and live demonstrations on the latest technologies and innovations.

‘Leveraging Generative AI for Better Architecture & Design’ with Greg Widmeyer
Date: Wednesday, October 23, 2024
Time: 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. MT
Fee: Early: $50 | Regular: $65
Generative AI (GenAI) and AI-infused tools are flooding the architecture, engineering, and construction industry, but these tools alone will not take work from practitioners. Instead, understanding and using the right combination of AI tools to augment the design process is what gives professionals better outputs and a competitive advantage. The disruption caused by GenAI means better and faster ways for practitioners to evaluate, adopt, and integrate potentially novel solutions which might have fallen through the cracks without AI’s predictive and analytic capabilities.
During this seminar, Greg will cover the basics of GenAI, provide an overview of governance and policy considerations, and evaluate some of the recently released solutions against safety, privacy, and ROI considerations. Attendees will gain valuable insights on integrating GenAI into the design process.
‘We have the Technology, Now What? How We Are Evolving a Practice-Wide Culture of Computational Design’ with Megan Brooks and Mark Roloson
Date: Wednesday, October 23, 2024
Time: 9 – 10 a.m. MT
Fee: Early: $50 | Regular: $65
The AEC industry plays a critical role in the future of our society and, as professionals, we strive to produce the best possible solution for the complex requirements of each project. As the requirements increase in complexity, both financial and time budgets are reduced. Part of the solution is enabling design professionals to leverage computational power to utilize data already available as part of their work, to help reduce decision-making time and guide professionals on the path to as optimal a solution as possible.
This session will present a multi-year journey in elevating Computational Design (CD) within a practice. Megan and Mark will demonstrate how a company has grown its use of Computational Design from a few siloed passionate self-learners to a servant leadership framework that enables and encourages all teams to use CD in their workflows. They will also examine the most and least successful initiatives undertaken providing attendees with the tools to start their journey.
‘Architecture Keynote: Hop on the Train or Get Left Behind: The Inevitable Amalgamation of Architects’ Ingenuity & Artificial Intelligence’ with Megan Brooks and Ben Hackman
Date: Wednesday, October 23, 2024
Time: 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. MT
Fee: Free
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a game changer in today’s architecture profession. With its advanced modelling capabilities and techniques, architects are better equipped to streamline mundane tasks such as drawing annotations, report writing, and code compliance checks as well as make better decisions regarding key design features including structural integrity, carbon footprint, energy efficiency, and user comfort.
The deployment of AI comes with risks such as accuracy concerns and job displacement fears. As with past transitions from hand-drafting to CAD, and CAD to BIM, adaptation is key. AI can significantly advance sustainability by optimizing building designs, managing budgets, and improving overall efficiency.
Join this panel of industry experts as they share invaluable insights on the following:
- Beyond future promises: real-life examples of leveraging AI for efficiency, intelligence, and capacity gains without sacrificing the creativity and originality of architects
- Risks and challenges of fully deploying AI within workflows including trust issues and fear of job loss
- Bolstering sustainability efforts with AI including energy performance and net zero targets
