Transforming an Urban Hospital with Smart Tech and Design
Located on a constrained urban site, Toronto Western Hospital’s new patient tower has been designed where key spatial relationships that are traditionally horizontal have been organized vertically. There are three levels of surgical suites supported by a POCU/PACU, ICU, and inpatient units located on separate floors. This session will provide insight into three key areas for design of this vertical model of care: healthcare planning, clinical operations, and integration of technology. A key component for the success of this model of care is innovative strategies for integrating technology to support patient care.
This required a strategic planning process, utilizing lean principles and showcasing how the integration of advanced technology solutions addresses spatial constraints to improve patient flow and communication. In addition to a description of the spatial and clinical requirements, the speakers will describe the approach for selecting and applying technological solutions, from real-time scheduling to advanced patient monitoring systems, to mitigate space limitations and enhance service delivery. Participants will discover how strategic technology planning can advance patient transportation, enable effective departmental communication, and support staff in providing high-quality care.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify design constraints in urban hospitals and learn to navigate spatial challenges and trade-offs in dense environments.
- Master technology planning for healthcare with an understanding of the process of using technology to streamline patient care and communication.
- Evaluate technologies for improved patient flow by discovering and assessing technological solutions.
- Apply lessons from technology implementation by incorporating insights from past projects for better planning and execution in future healthcare designs.
About the Healthcare Design (HCD) Conference + Expo
