Infographic: Peter Lougheed Wildlife Overpass: Design That Bridges the Wild and the Road

January 27, 2026

An 80% reduction in animal-vehicle collisions. That’s the impact of the Peter Lougheed Wildlife Overpass in Alberta.

Across Canada, a vehicle strikes wildlife every 38 minutes. While highways bring people closer to nature, they also fragment habitats, disrupt migration routes, and lead to deadly wildlife-vehicle collisions — costing animal and human lives and placing a heavy burden on public infrastructure and healthcare systems.

What if we could reconnect the landscapes our roads divide? Wildlife overpasses make that possible. By extending the forest over the highway, these structures create safe, continuous corridors for animals to move, feed, and migrate, all separate from the traffic below.

The result is safer roads, healthier ecosystems, and a more balanced relationship between nature and infrastructure.
