Urban Green Cohousing

Exploring new ways to live

Mixed-Use

DIALOG worked with Urban Green to develop a vision where residents are more than just neighbours; they are a diverse community that share the common values of building a vibrant community, being environmentally and socially sustainable, and doing so in an urban environment.

The result is an energy-efficient, 26-unit midrise housing project in Edmonton’s Old Strathcona neighbourhood. The building is composed of private residential units of varying sizes and bedroom counts, catering to a range of demographic groups including young families, single occupants, and seniors. The project encourages cross-pollination between its diverse group of residents through shared amenity spaces. Residents can use these spaces to share their experiences, knowledge and build a stronger sense of community.

For many residents, the Old Strathcona neighbourhood holds deep sentimental value. The design was carefully planned to capture and enhance the eclectic and diverse character that reflects both Urban Green and this unique part of Edmonton.

The common house offers residents and visitors a versatile space to come together at a variety of scales. A commercial kitchen facilitates collective meals and events, all with a direct connection to the gardens and greenery outside.

Upon arrival, the shared living room gives a warm, welcoming atmosphere that feels like home: cozy and peaceful at times, yet bustling with music and energy on other occasions.

The design process was highly collaborative, involving numerous workshops and evening conversations to collect and synthesize input from the group. This inclusive approach ensured all ages could contribute ideas, such as a ‘secret’ path connecting the common house to the kids’ playroom.

Scaling down to the neighbouring houses presented a new opportunity to be immersed in Edmonton’s majestic elm canopy. As the landscape matures, the roof and at-grade gardens will transform into an ever-evolving area where the community can spend quality time together, further solidifying Urban Green’s image and values.

With a substantive solar array on the roof and robust detailing of envelope and building systems, Urban Green maintains a minimal environmental impact to promote sustainable living choices. The residents are committed to improving the community they share with renewed vibrancy in a loved neighbourhood.
