A Space for Meaningful Design: DIALOG to open new studio in Ottawa

June 17, 2025

DIALOG has worked in Ottawa for decades. It is a place where we’re proud to have done meaningful work with a positive impact on the people that live there, and on the planet. Now, we are excited to open a permanent home in Ottawa.

The Ottawa studio marks our sixth location, and its opening reflects something we’ve known for a long time: Ottawa is at the centre of national and global conversations, and a centre for innovative design.

In the heart of the Zibi development, our new studio at 6 Booth Street is expected to open in December and gives our Ottawa team a place to call home. We have had people based in the capital region since 2016, and this space allows us to collaborate, create, and contribute even more meaningfully to the communities we serve.

DIALOG has spent the past 65 years working to improve the well-being of communities and the environment through thoughtful, sustainable design. Our portfolio spans a wide range of transformative projects including cultural hubs like Granville Island, memorable civic buildings, and hospitals where biophilic design supports healing. It extends net-zero mass timber office towers, ambitious government retrofits that dramatically reduce embodied carbon and emissions, breathing double-skin façades that adapt to shifting weather, human-centric transit facilities and transit-oriented communities.

As a multidisciplinary team of architects, urban planners, interior designers, engineers, landscape architects, and sustainability consultants, our practice takes a collaborative approach to addressing the complex challenges communities face today, with a goal to design spaces that are inclusive and resilient.

Jie Chen, DIALOG Partner and Ottawa Studio Chair

Chen will be joined by partners Mara Baum and Robert Claiborne, associate Maria DeGuzman, and a growing team in Ottawa including Agnes Belkacem, David M. Couto, Erik Simon, Jennifer Harmer, John Gough, Josh Frey, Maya Jarrah, Pallavi Sangwan, and Theo Jemtrud. Baum is a leader in sustainable design with deep expertise in climate action, health, and wellness, and Claiborne brings decades of experience leading large-scale civic and cultural projects across Canada. DeGuzman brings a wealth of knowledge in project management across retail, workplace, and government projects.

The Ottawa Studio was launched thanks to the ambition and dedication of many DIALOGers before me. I’m proud to lead this next chapter and excited to grow our local impact with shared values of inclusion and resilience.

The new studio – designed by Claiborne – gives DIALOG a physical presence that enhances in-person connection and collaboration and supports our growing portfolio in the region.

As we prepare our new home in Ottawa, we acknowledge and pay tribute to the Algonquin Anishinabe Nation, on whose ancestral territory our new studio is located. We do so with gratitude and a commitment to listening, learning, and advancing reconciliation on the land where we are privileged to live and work.
