Tofino Main Street Concept Plan

A new vision for an end-of-the-road community

Indigenous Collaborations

DIALOG lead the development of a new design concept for the future of Tofino’s historic Main Street. The project offered an opportunity to maintain the distinct character and sense of place of Tofino while strengthening the broader downtown as a seam that stitches the waterfront together with the rest of the community. DIALOG’s work involved extensive community engagement, as well as the creation of design concepts to address complex parking issues and establish a beautiful pedestrian realm that maximizes views and physical connections to the waterfront.

Planning & Urban Design

The Shore shopping and restaurant complex, as it was before the concept plan was developed.

The Shore complex, as re-imagined by the design team.

The design concepts identify and create “moments to pause”, celebrating place and fostering opportunities for lingering and connecting with neighbours.

The new main street concept envisaged a lively, interactive space that addressed civic and tourism needs on several levels.

Community engagement included a charrette, interactive public open house, and a film featuring long-time residents and business owners sharing their stories about local history.
