Greater Vernon Athletics Park

Innovation meets athletics

Sports & Recreation

The Greater Vernon Athletic Park presents a comprehensive solution to the challenge of maintaining optimal playing conditions in extreme heat environments. The sports complex features an IAAF-compliant running track and a FIFA 2-Star certified field that mirrors pro surfaces, guaranteeing top-level play for UEFA & FIFA matches. Traditional synthetic turf can become dangerously hot under intense sunlight. Our solution lies in the innovative use of a cork-infill system for the turf field. Cork possesses superior thermal insulation properties, significantly reducing heat absorption and ensuring a comfortable playing surface even when temperatures exceed 35°C.

The running track incorporates alternating blue and grey lanes, enhancing visual appeal and athlete performance.  A strategically designed landing area allows for simultaneous javelin and discus throws, streamlining track and field events. Designed with adaptability in mind, the complex boasts modular change rooms with rollshutter doors that can be configured to accommodate large or small teams.  A dedicated rooftop plaza provides spectators with a panoramic view of the entire facility.

This state-of-the-art sports complex is purpose-built to deliver exceptional performance, ensuring year-round athletic activity regardless of harsh climatic conditions.

The fieldhouse building was designed to blend in form and colour with the natural stepping formations of the Vernon hills beyond.

The site is set high above Kalamalka Lake and from these bleachers, not only can you watch the field games but there is a great view of the blue lake and hills beyond.

The Regional District of North Okanagan set this facility in an optimal location for the local community and to share with the adjacent College of North Okanagan.
